When your unit is low on refrigerant, the evaporator coil will freeze up. If you turn your system off and then back on, you should hear it kick in. After about 10 minutes of running, go back outside and feel the coils again. They should be cold.

If not, there could still be a leak somewhere or no refrigerant coming out of the compressor, so you will need to call in an HVAC professional.

These numbers pertain to efficiency ratings for an HVAC unit, but they work in different ways. The BTU is the amount of energy that needs to be removed from one pound of water to drop one degree Fahrenheit at sea level under normal atmospheric conditions. Conditions vary if you are at a higher or lower elevation.

The SEER rating, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, tells you how much energy an air conditioner uses relative to the amount of cooling it provides. A higher number is better in this case.

Many people are trying to cut costs by servicing their HVAC systems less frequently than recommended, but this is not a good idea. Many serious problems can happen over time that may be prevented if you have your unit inspected regularly.

We recommend scheduling an appointment for service twice per year, once before the heating season begins and once before the cooling season starts.
